Nomads Den Reviews

Those who just like to sit with a cup of tea and enjoy the panorama will definitely have a nice time at Nomads Den as it has a beautiful three-hundred-sixty-degree panorama with amazing views of the nearby mountains from the rooftop. However, the rooms and the hostel in general are rather shabby and the unclear and slightly misleading description of the rooms might have you staying in a dorm that is not entirely what you expected.

The Location

Nomads Den is one of the first hostels you will reach when walking toward Old Manali from the bus stop. It is quite high upon a hill so you will have to do some serious uphill walking to get here. If you have too much luggage or do not fancy the climb, tuk tuks can drop you around five hundred metres from the hostel, but the rest of the distance you will have to cover on foot. The hostel is in a very authentic area in the countryside with not many other touristy facilities in its close vicinity. This might be a nice bonus, as you can gain a genuine insight into life in the Indian Himalayas. However, you will have to walk a bit to find somewhere to eat. Also, the area behind the hostel is agricultural land and at the time of the review, farmers play loud Bollywood music all the time, which might not be your idea of relaxation in the mountains. However, it is in easy reach of the Hanuman Temple and the adjacent nature trail.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers two types of dorm rooms. One is called the common shared surface which is a room with mattresses scattered around on the floor. This is the cheapest option, but if you stay here you will not be given access to the Wi-Fi or the hot water, and can only use the toilet in the garden. Make sure to check the photos of your room when booking, because it is also listed as a six-bed dorm. This room gets very cold in the winter. The other type of room has bunk beds and an en suite bathroom with hot water and a bit more space but not much else inside. The place generally gives the impression of not being cleaned regularly; sheets, pillows, and blankets are not changed in between guests.

Common Spaces

Access to the common areas are the nicest parts of staying at this hostel. The rooftop is a great place to relax and take in the natural surroundings. It also offers a very basic gym. In front of the hostel, there is another outdoors common area where it is possible to light a campfire. Unlike most hostels in the area, this one offers a kitchen for guests to use even it is not too modern or clean. There is also a room that has sofas, mattresses, books, board games, and a huge painted map of the area on the wall but it also serves as the reception and the bedroom of the owner so you might not feel comfortable spending too much time here.

Summary

All in all, Nomads Den can be a good choice if your priority is the cheap price, nice views, and cosy common areas in the open air, but do not expect to have much privacy from the owner and do look into the exact description of what room you are paying for and what is included in the price.
