NeapolitanTrips Hostel is a modern hostel with a great location in Naples city centre for exploring the city and enjoying some delicious pizza.
The Location
The hostel is located in the city centre of Naples and is within walking distance to most of the important sights. Any other sights are an easy trip on public transport away as you have the Toledo metro station just a couple of minutes walk away from the hostel. It is also a great place from which to base yourself for day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Amalfi Coast, or even a trip to Ischia Island. The Napoli Centrale Train Station is just a short trip on the metro away and you will also find the bus station here. For a trip to the islands, the ferries leave from the port, which is about a twenty-minute walk from the hostel. You can also find supermarkets and many restaurants all around the hostel, so it is easy to find a bite to eat.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers a range of different dorm rooms as well as one private room to stay in. Dorm rooms are available from four to twelve beds whilst still remaining quite spacious. Bunks are of the metal frame variety and therefore do not offer much privacy or stability. The design of the bed and mattress also manage to make it difficult to stay on the bed as we always felt like we were being bounced off the bed and our pillow would always fall on the floor. Each bed comes with its own reading lamp, power point, and a little tub in which to hold your things. Lockers are provided, but are not secure as you can lift the mattress up and take whatever you want from inside them. If you feel shy about changing in front of other people then there is also a small dressing room where you can change in private.
If you are looking for a private room, then you have the option of a triple room that comes with a double and twin bed but you still have to use the shared bathrooms.
The bathrooms are separated by gender and are usually pretty clean. Toilets are of the Italian variety that do not include a seat, which makes it a very uncomfortable toilet experience and some also cannot be locked. Showering is also a problem with a lack of hot water, especially when more than one shower is being used at the same time.
Common Spaces
NeapolitanTrips Hostel has some great large common areas that give you plenty of opportunity to meet other travelers. The terrace outside has lots of comfy seating to relax on a warm evening, whilst the dining area has plenty of tables to enjoy the good included breakfast you can enjoy each morning. You also have a shared kitchen where they even provide free pasta, canned tomatoes, rice, and spices making it easy to cook on a budget.
The hostel does have a lot of rules and fines posted around the hostel that do take away some of the fun of staying in a hostel. There are also many rules about in which common areas you can and cannot eat and drink things purchased from outside the hostel -- the only place it is allowed is on a four-person table in the kitchen, which doesn't make much sense considering the size of the common areas (which are huge). A price list for damages of every item is also listed in the dorm rooms.
Luggage storage is available but is priced on a per-piece basis and you also have access to a laundry, which is handy for washing your clothes. Free Wi-Fi is also provided throughout the hostel and you have a elevator, so you don't need to worry about carrying your luggage up the stairs.
Summary
Overall, this hostel could be amazing, but many issues need to be fixed before it can be a fully enjoyable hostel experience.
