Ecomama Reviews

Ecomama is a combination hotel and hostel slightly outside of the central area of Amsterdam. It is ecofriendly in the sense that many of the materials used are recycled and the hostel is environmentally conscious. It is a slightly pricier hostel but offers travelers a great place to relax and enjoy their time in Amsterdam.

The Location

The hostel is quite hard to find because there is no sign except for a tiny bit on the door that says "Also here: Ecomama Hotel." The entrance to the hotel/hostel is actually a coffee shop called Filter. It is located close to the Waterlooplein tram station (Tram number 9) and the Waterlooplein metro stop. It is a short walk to the Centrum neighborhood of Amsterdam where the Red Light District and Centraal Station are. It is a medium walk to the Museumplein, where the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmseum are. Public transportation is fairly easy to take, and fairly inexpensive, although the metro is only really useful for going to/from Centraal Station and the trams are not very quick.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel rooms are a bit different from each other. We stayed in both a regular room (five beds) and the el cheapo room (twelve beds). The el cheapo room has standard, bunk-style beds and no lockers in the room. There are lockers outside that are free to use. There are only two power outlets for the entire room. The regular room, on the other hand, has staggered bunks that are not really bunk beds. The higher beds are not attached to the lower beds and are not directly above them. There are more power outlets in the regular room and a few lockers, although there are not as many lockers as beds (but again, more lockers are available outside).

The bedding is comfortable and clean and so are the bathrooms. There are plenty of toilets, showers, and sinks. Soap is provided and there is ample changing area inside each shower to dress/undress. There are also plenty of hooks to hold your clothes when you shower. Everything is impressively clean.

Common Spaces

There is a large common area with a long dining table, kitchen with fridge, silverware, flatware, stove, microwave. There is also a lounge area with seating. There is an honesty bar (minifridge) that the staff stocks with drinks and snacks where you drop off some money to pay for each item you remove from the fridge, on the honor system. There is also a tepee in the common area. Inside are several bed like furniture for sitting or resting.

The Wi-Fi is quick and readily accessible in all the common areas, although the Wi-Fi is very spotty in the rooms. Every other night or so, there is an activity planned by the staff. Breakfast is not included or served, although the cafe in the front of the hostel serves pretty good food (although it's fairly pricey by backpacker standards).

Summary

Ecomama is a clean, friendly hostel with plenty of amenities and great common areas. It costs a bit more than most other hostels in the area, but it is still a reasonable value because of how clean everything is and how much it offers in terms of bathroom and kitchen facilities. The atmosphere is friendly, especially around the dining table where many people can meet each other. The staff are remarkably friendly -- no matter who is working reception, they take a few minutes to sit down with each guest during check-in to go over the map and discuss attractions, transportation and the like. Overall, if you want a premium hostel away from the hustle and bustle of the Red Light District and party scene, the Ecomama has plenty to offer.

Description

Ecomama introduces a new “green and upgraded” atmosphere to this. We make it our mission to engage everyone who is staying in Ecomama into this feeling of sustainable and joyful living. So come and experience it yourself, we are looking forward to meeting you!

Staying at our boutique hostels means unique and customized: different ways of sleeping to fit everyone’s personal needs. Of course we have the classic mixed dorm style rooms, all with their own theme. A solo girl in need for some girl time? Then the Ladies Only Dorm might be perfect for you with all its different shapes of pink and free girly goodies. Getting away for a romantic weekend? Then the Double Deluxe with bathroom might be more suitable for you and your sweetheart! For our flashpackers (backpacker with a slightly bigger budget and need for privacy) we have Cabins: a cheaply priced cabin-box with no roommates or windows, with shared bathroom. For our always conscious budget seekers we have the El Cheapo room, where making your own bed is included in the price. See if there is something for your liking - either way our staff is willing to go above and beyond to make your stay and experience memorable and unique.

Ecomama stand for “green and conscious” hospitality, which you can find in all the different ways Ecomama is build and run: cradle to cradle furniture, use of fair trade materials, natural stone heating, environmentally friendly water system and waste recycling. As we like to engage you in this way of living, we remind and invite you to join our green mission by being a conscious traveller and guest.

Of course we have all the standard facilities like book exchange, movie lounge, fully equipped kitchen, bike rental and so on. But on top of that we have an in-house coffee bar (to drink, not to smoke) for all kinds of fair trade organic coffees, teas and treats (also possible for fresh and breakfast & lunch).
