Get to know Viseu (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Viseu.

Viseu is a city in the central region of Portugal, well recognized for its good food and pastry, wine, beautiful landscapes, and a good nightlife. Viseu is very well located depending on the kind of activities that you are looking for.

Viseu is a rich city historically, so during your stay don't miss the Grao Vasco museum; the parks and squares in the city center; the "Se" Cathedral; and the churches, convents, and chapels located in the historic quarter (it's worth a visit during the day). At night, this historic quarter gets a new light and vibe, as the best restaurants (cheap prices), pubs, bars, and discos are located here. Even although Viseu is a small city, expect a lot of fun and a good nightlife (especially on weekends) -- the people are very friendly, and love to hang out at night.

Viseu is also well known for its good cuisine (served in big portions -- expect to gain some weight!). Try "bola de carne" (a salty bread filled with different meats), or you can choose from a lot of typical dishes of meat or codfish; for dessert, you can have the famous "castanhas de ovos" -- a rich and very sweet treat.

If you have more than a few days of vacation, it's worth visiting the surrounds -- São Pedro do Sul, Coimbra (typical student city), and Aveiro are the most beautiful cities around Viseu (each trip takes around an hour by car one way).

There aren't so many hostels in Viseu, so it's better to book your accommodation in advance. Viseu's hostels are normally simple and quiet places, so don't expect luxurious accommodation. The good thing in Viseu's hostels are the friendly staff that you meet -- they will do anything to help you to have the best time ever.
