Get to know Kinsale (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Kinsale.

Kinsale is one of the small treasures to discover along the coastal areas in western Cork. It sits just south of Cork, right on the ocean. The harbor in Kinsale contributes much to the history of the town as well as to current popular activities. There is usually plenty of room in the hostels in Kinsale, but make sure to call ahead on the weekends and during peak summer times, since hostels all over the coast can occasionally fill up.

Reaching Kinsale by car is not difficult; buses run regularly from Cork as well. Kinsale hostels are all centrally located in the town, which means that the good pubs and grocery stores and things to do are all within local walking distance. Check out the Harbour Bar for an unusual experience (though the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming!). The Spaniard Bar is also a hit, with an old-fashioned setting inside that makes you feel like you're actually sitting inside a ship.

For things to do during the day, definitely go to Charles Fort -- it is cheap to get in and a really well-preserved historical fort. Take a tour and learn about some of the fascinating history of the place (from war invasions to hippie squatters). If adventure is more your thing, there is a lot to do in the harbor. Kayaking is a popular activity, especially when the weather is warm. If you have time, take a bike and go for a ride along the beautiful coast. Even in cloudy weather, the scenery is still beautiful.
