Get to know Foca (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Foca.

Once known as the “black hole of Bosnia,” the Foca river valley is now re-emerging as a tourist destination and international sports centre. The town of Foca draws adventurers from around the world to raft down the nearby Tara river, and is home to a number of Olympic athletes.

The town contains the Seminary of Saint Peter of Sarajevo and Dabar-Bosna, one of seven seminaries in the Serbian Orthodox Church, and the oldest National Park, Sutjeska. Sports and outdoor activities are a huge draw for travelers who stay at hostels and hotels in Foca.

Accommodations here are varied, with hotels, hostels, vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, and even upscale resorts. A stay at a hostel here allows visitors to interact with many other explorers and Foca’s local population – friendly people who are eager to introduce newcomers to their unique culture and traditions.

Restaurants here also offer plenty of opportunities to familiarize yourself with the culture of this community. Foca has been around since medieval times, as a trading centre known as Hotca on route between Ragusa (now Dubrovnik) and the city of Constantinople (which is now Istanbul, Turkey). This town has seen its fair share of war and violence, and history buffs can see hints of Foca’s tumultuous past throughout the community.

Most transport in and around the area is by bus, so tourists here can expect to take a shuttle from the airport. Ferries are another option for visitors looking to get out on the water and see some of the nearby Greek islands. Taxis are available as well, but travelers can expect to pay a bit more for a taxi ride to their hotel or hostel in Foca. A better option for tourists who want to avoid buses is a car rental, which can be picked up at the airport after flying in to Istanbul.
