Get to know Sarandë (no more

Sarandë is a rather small town located on the Albanian Riviera by the Ionian sea. Hence its plushy atmosphere, Mediterranean climate and the newly constructed beach boulevard it is often described as the Albanian Monte Carlo -- for a reason.

Sarandë is a vibrant town -- apart from sitting in its lively cafes and restaurants, it is great place to party on the beaches and enjoy the sunshine (more than three hundred sunny days a year are typically measured). Few museums and the old castle of Lekures keep the culture-oriented visitors busy. In addition, Sarandë is a good base for exploring the sights of Southern Albania -- the ancient city of Butrint inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List is an obvious day trip. The pristine beaches of Ksamili and another UNESCO site of Gjirokastër old town are also easily accessible by bus. The village of Dhermi, “the Goa of Europe,” is worth a relaxing visit as well.

There is a good range of accommodation in Sarandë. You can choose from several Sarandë hostels or upscale hotels built to offer five-star accommodation for international tourists. Hostels in Sarandë typically offer free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Advance booking is recommended in high season from July to late August, though the tourist information office should be able to arrange a bed for you. Almost all Sarandë hostels close their doors for winter, so it is wise to contact the property beforehand if planning a trip between November and April.

Sarandë can be reached by bus from Tirana, Vlorë, Berat, or Gjirokastër as well as from several Greek cities. Private transfer by taxi can usually be arranged even without an earlier notice. The town is also connected to the Greek island of Corfu by ferry -- double check the schedules as they are subject to change. That being said, keep in mind that ferry connections between Sarandë and Corfu are practically nonexistent in winter.
