Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Singapore

Singapore. One of the richest, cleanest, and safest of all of the countries in Asia and you will adore getting a hostel for a couple of days here. It is a great way to be introduced into Asian culture if it is your first time with a backpack, but beware that Singapore can be very expensive as a country. Also be aware that one of the strangest and yet most amazing things about Singapore is that chewing gum is banned, one of the reasons that the streets are so clean. If you have any make sure you throw it out before you arrive.

The island is a really small, and as such you can get to pretty much anywhere you need to in the country within the space of an hour on the train system they have. You will find that all of the hostels, of which there are a large number, are located within the city region of the island so do your research as to where exactly your hostel is and what transport and amenities it is near before you book. If you can, book one within close distance to the train station to make getting around easier.

Of the best things to do here in Singapore, the most highly recommended is the Night Safari where you can visit a zoo at night time and experience what many of the different nocturnal animals from around the world are doing during the night. You can also visit the zoo during the day time but the night time experience is a different one to that of most other zoos and is quite cool.

Sentosa Island is a popular place to visit during the day. It is home to an abundance of different upmarket hotels and resorts, and also home to the Universal Studios Singapore, the Adventure Cove Waterpark, the aquarium, cable cars, luging, and a Madame Tussauds wax museum. It is very geared up towards tourism and can be a little bit cheesy depending on your taste but even if you don't visit these attractions, it is still worth taking a wander around the island on the boardwalk. You can get here by taking the train over to the island.

There are an abundance of little neighbourhoods on the main island. Check out Little India and Chinatown as they have some interesting things going on there and often they have markets. During the evening there is some good nightlife around the Clarke Quay, but again, bring a full wallet as it can be quite an expensive area to go out in. While you are out an about though, a must do in Singapore is to head to the Raffles Hotel and get yourself a famous Singapore Sling cocktail. Again, expect that it will be expensive but you are paying for the experience here as much as the drink as this is where the Singapore Sling was invented.

Singapore is a major flight hub for a lot of different routes throughout Asia, and between Europe, America and Australia. If your flight is getting routed through here, try and get a day or so to explore as a stop off.
