Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Bali

Bali, an Indonesian island located between Java and Lombok, is the main tourist destination in the country. Here you can feel the real Asia and at the same time, you can escape for amazing beaches, good surf, a happening nightlife, and excellent hostels -- it's the perfect mix for your vacation!

Bali, a small volcanic island, houses one of the few Hindu societies in the whole of southeast Asia. It is very rich in culture and has amazing landscapes including the rice fields (really beautiful terraces in the interior of the island) and volcanoes on the north and northeast side of the island. If you enjoy trekking and beautiful sunrises viewed from the summit of volcanoes, you must climb Mount Agung –- it's hard trekking, but totally worth it -- or Mount Batur, which is easier and has an incredible lake at the bottom. Here you can also see some festivals in the temples at the bottom of the mountains that are really important in Balinese culture.

If you are looking for nice beaches and a party, Canggu is the place to be. It's eight kilometers of golden sand –- although the central area has a little bit darker sand -– with good surf waves. If you just want to visit the beach and chill out, head to Nusa Lembongan, a traditional backpackers destination, or the peaceful beaches in the east coast (Amed is the best) or Lovina in the north, near awesome places for snorkeling. The cultural center of the island, Ubud, is definitely worth a visit.

The most common way to arrive in Bali is by airplane through the international airport "Ngurah Rai International Airport" just south of Kuta. Transportation by bus and ferry to other islands is plentiful but sometimes not very cheap.

There are plenty of hostels in Bali, and there are also other cheap accommodations if you are traveling in couple or with a group of friends - the so called Homestays.

During high season, the island gets very crowded and you should get your accommodation in advance. Bali's hostels are nice, with plenty of information about traveling around Bali and other islands in Indonesia. Usually you can hire surfboards in the hostels, if not, just go to the beach!
