Worth the trip to SD
Well prepared for visitors from all over the world with personal attention and maps. I walked to Balboa Park in 30 minutes and after the museums closed into town. On a Sunday it is empty but fast food stores open. I will return.
Lucky D's San Diego
I have been traveling in USA for three months as a mature age backpacker and while in San Francisco I was informed by another backpacker about Lucky D's in San Diego. I arrived late in the evening by Greyhound into San Diego, the directions found on there web page were very precise and correct to get there with current applicable prices of transport. Upon arrival I was greeted by a pleasant receptionist. I was informed that I would receive a discount of staying seven nights and pay for only six / per week due to staying a long period and being a YHA life member, that was nice and unexpected. Was informed about free daily breakfast and three dinners per week. Roberto makes really nice food (dinner) and it is presented to a five star level. The kitchen is great and has enough cutlery when busy, does need a knife sharpener, The kitchen is the heart of LD's It is the place where meet most people meet over a meal. There is a TV/common room that has fridges and media center with netflix, so can watch TV/movie, read, play board games when having a quiet day. When social events are planned for evening the common room becomes the meeting place at 9:30pm so gets a bit busy. The location is very central to public transport, pubs, restaurants and parks and information is readily available in LD's including bus routes. LD's is above a pub and during silent hours does become very noisy, even more so when NFL games being played or the San Diego fire department respond to an emergency, station is just around corner. LD's provide ear plugs at reception There is a grocery store two blocks away that has super cheap prices for buying food. LD's offer discount tickets for San Diego Zoo & Seaworld. Rooms are cleaned daily, toilets cleaned 4xdaily. Social functions are organized and highlighted daily near reception. Recommend a list of free stuff be provided for arrivals, hiking, walks. I have traveled all over the world backpacking and the owner is from New Zealand and I can see where she has set the standard from, Unfortunately there is a policy of 14 days stay / 365 period but if work 20 hours a week you can stay for free with unlimited length of time. contradiction of policy?? It is one of the best hostels in USA and did enjoy my stay. Thank you very much for enjoyable visit to San Diego

This hostel is all around cool. It is filled with color, inspiring art, fun people, and good vibes. The building itself is in a great location. Super close to the main party/bar hopping street, fifth ave. It's downtown location provides walkability and convenient access public transportation. It's within walking distance from Amtrak, the Greyhound Station and if you're a big walker like me, even the airport. When I first flew in I walked the 3.5 miles from there, crazy I know. I like that this hostel's dorm rooms only hold up to 4 people, way more privacy than most hostels. This is definitely a party hostel! Get that ibuprofen ready for the morning because it may be needed to cure that SoCal hangover.
Nice place downtown
Lucky D's is a fun place to stay at for a very low price. The staff is very friendly; breakfast and dinner were awesome and I had the impression that everything was clean enough. The only disadvantage was that it was quite noisy during the night (mainly street-noise); but using ear-plugs it was okay in the end ...
Friendly staff and a bunch of benefits
I spent a weekend in this hostel and I had a nice time there. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, a good breakfast is available as well as free internet. Common bathrooms and awesome spaces for socializing. Not far from the airport. Very close to the lively Gaslamp area. The only reason I didn't rate it five stars is that the cleanness of my room was good but not excellent (pillowcases and sheets ok, but the rest was a bit too dusty).
Love it!
This is the best hostel i've been to -- and i've been to a fair few! The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful, free internet and food three times a week, free breakfast, free laundry powder, and loads of trips organised during the week. Lucky D's has such a homey feel to it, everyone is made to feel welcome, i love it here! The only downside is that its a fair trek to get to the beaches, but it's worth it because the beaches are beautiful. Will be returning in the future!
Amazing place!
This has to be the best hostel experience i have had. I checked in on my own and was made to feel like i had been there for years. All the staff were really friendly and it has a home from home feel. There was always something going on day or night and free dinners three times a week and free breakfasts everyday helped save my money. I recommend this hostel to everyone i meet.
Amazing
Spent a few days here during the summer. The Staff were absolutely great. Still in contact with a few of them. They brought us out on the best pub crawls around the Gas Lamp Quarter. We went to some brilliant bars. There were organised trips and parties everyday. The building of the hostel was a bit old and but the atmosphere was great. it felt like a home away from home. Its right in the middle of town, Pecto park is only down the road, Balboa Park is up the road. It's definitely one place I'd go back to. Had some brilliant sessions here.
