This is a tiny hostel compared to others I've been to and it is very f
I found the views to be awesome and I love that there is a hot tub, I am also very happy with it's location being on convenient 1 makes it very convenient, they are taking the lighthouse and restoring it the docent was very helpful and we had a great time talking to him.
The staff member at the desk was very accommodating when I had questions. All in all I enjoyed my stay very very much 3 nights.
Beautiful, quiet, remote location with beach
We loved the beach behind this hostel, it was beautiful and untouched. The hostel was well run, as clean as can be expected. We are a married couple and stayed in a private room, kept to ourselves. However, the two kitchens and living area provide ample opportunity for interaction if we had chosen to do so. The only disadvantage is that if you do stay in the private Fog Room you have to walk outside to go to the bathroom. And they did not use paper products for bathrooms or kitchen, so hand towels got kind of dirty and wet toward the end of the day. Overall, beautiful!
ok ok. yes the view is good. yes it is good to hear the ocean from your bed but there are a few things that put me off this hostel. some of this could also have to do with the season i was there. it was winter and although not cold, not the kind of weather in which you can enjoy the beautiful grounds. there is a lockout from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which is frustrating, you are not allowed alcohol on the premises, and the smoking area is so ridiculous that i just broke that rule entirely. i can understand that this would be a great place for families, but as an independent traveler i was quite disappointed. i didn't have a car and feared for my life on the highway. the buses are terrible and only run every hour and a half on weekdays -- less on weekends. i don't like HI in general because i find that they lack character. i felt that the atmosphere in the hostel was not conducive to meeting people and i found the staff kind of unhelpful. thats not that they weren't nice but one girl had very little knowledge of activities in the area and the other woman said that there was a nice trail when it was in fact mostly road and the little trail there was was not very good. i don't recommend this hostel, but if you're like me and you have to make your own opinions then go for it.
The hostel was great! You can hear the ocean from your room all night long and you wake up to a great view. A small trail leads down to the ocean. The staff was friendly and I had no problems with my stay. An adjustable heater made my private room cozy and the showers had hot water. My room was clean and perfect for two. Don't forget your bath towel and clean shower-shoes (flip-flops) since showers are shared.
Point Montara Lighthouse has a magical effect on my spirit. Every time I go there, I feel renewed to life and relaxed as no other place leaves me. I love this place!
I stayed for one night at this hostel a few years ago while I was in San Francisco celebrating a life-changing event with friends. The views are incredible; it is an absolutely gorgeous place in the world! The woman who checked us in was unwelcoming and appeared to go out of her way to be unfriendly, however all else about the experience was fabulous. There was one refrigerator and cupboard there that contained food for all to share, which was nice. We had brought along plenty of food and ate at a restaurant in Half Moon Bay the next morning anyway. Met many friendly and interesting people of all ages there. Highly recommended.
In the summer of 2004 I found the Montara Hostel, as ever, a delightful pied-a-terre for exploring the wonderful California coastline south to Half Moon Bay. Walk south along the cliffs and beach, have lunch on the way, then take the Samtrans bus back - right to the hostel! There's also an espresso cafe five minutes north. When you need a break from San Francisco, this is pure heaven. Any season is beautiful here - but book ahead in high summer.
My wife and I stayed here in October of 2003 with our two young children. The staff were wonderful and they even gave us a break on the cost of our overnight stay. We stayed in the large building next to the historic lighthouse and slept well. The kids loved the place and the morning views were terrific. We highly recommend staying here!
