Not so great
Two nights, private room, October 2016. Hostel is located in an old, rundown two-story building in the Gaslamp Quarter. Hostel is not very clean and much of the building had an unpleasant odor. The staff is obsessed with rules and requires an excessive $20 per person deposit. I've stayed at many hostels and I couldn't wait to leave this one. Only plus is the price.
Don't know how this place got decent ratings
Don't come here in the summer. No AC and you aren't allowed to open the windows to keep the bugs out. Also the place just felt grimy and gross. Not a comfortable stay. 2 stars for the location.
Great hostel, lovely atmosphere
Had an awesome time at Hostel on Third, fairly small so very easy to meet people. Staff are very friendly and helpful and the kitchen is clean and well-equipped. Only thing I would say is if you are just looking for a place to crash it can get a bit noisy but they do offer earplugs at the front desk.

My boyfriend and I stayed here and found the staff friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The hostel is clean, inviting, and filled with interesting travelers from all over. I would definitely stay here again.
Place you must stay in San Diego
The most amazing thing is the position, closeness to trolley and to many bus lines make it easy do go everywhere for those without a car. Basically inside Gaslamp, the nightlife is everything but boring. The kitchen is very well equipped and staff is nice. Only bad thing to mention is noise from other room and cleaning might be improved. The overall for the price is really good.
