Hi Hostel Reviews

Youth Hostel Zagreb is a budget-friendly, large hostel managed by Hostelling International and is perfect for backpackers who want somewhere reasonably quiet to stay with no frills.

The Location

This hostel has a great location just a ten-minute walk to the main square of Zagreb, so you can easily see all of the sights on foot. The Zagreb train station is located right at the end of the street, and if you are arriving by long distance bus it is about a fifteen-minute walk or a quick tram trip to the bus station. The hostel also has its own off-street parking, which is convenient for those arriving by car. Zagreb has many delicious restaurants, many of which are located around the hostel. You can also find supermarkets on this street too and the train station has a shopping centre as well where you can find other food options.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Zagreb Youth Hostel has both dorm and private rooms that range in size. Dormitories are quite small with just three to six beds in each room. Each bed has a locker and you can find a small desk and chair in each dorm room. Private rooms are very basic and quite narrow. They are available in single, twin, triple, and quad (all with single beds or bunks). You also have a small desk and a cupboard in most rooms. Air conditioning is not available in the rooms, so it can get very hot and stuffy, as the small desk size fan can't keep the room cool. You also have to make your own bed even in the private rooms which is difficult as the sheets are too small. The hostel policy is to also leave the key at reception every time you leave, which can get annoying if reception is busy or if you are sharing one key among everyone in the dorm.

Some of the private singles and twins come with a compact, en suite bathroom or a sink in the room. For everyone else, it is shared bathrooms on each floor that only have one shower each, so if it's busy you could be waiting a while, and the bathrooms tend to get a bit dirty later on in the day.

Common Spaces

This is not a hostel for socialising, as the only common area is a small lounge area that would fit just a handful of people near the reception area. Vending machines with hot and cold drinks are available in the lobby. And a microwave and refrigerator are available on request behind reception. Luggage storage is also available if you need to leave your bags to do some exploring.

Free Wi-Fi is available but it is a fairly poor connection that would constantly drop out; you can also use the public computers in reception. The overall vibe of the hostel is quite sterile and it is in desperate need of some updating. As it's a part of Hostelling International, you also need to pay an extra charge if you aren't a member and you might also find some large groups staying in the hostel.

Summary

This is a good option if you want a basic room at a budget price close to transport options and you aren't expecting to meet too many other travelers.

Description

Croatian capitol is often called the city of museums, as there are more of them per square meter than any other place in the world, which does not mean there is nothing else for you to do. You can, according to a local custom, have a coffee (popiti kavu), which translated from Croatian means: "sit and watch the world go by", as Miroslav Krleža, a famous Croatian writer used to do, or immerse in other rich contents this city offers to its visitors.

The youth hostel Zagreb is nested in Petrinjska street, in walking distance from the bus terminal, train station and all the sights.
