Guest House Kobe Nadeshikoya is a fine hostel with friendly staff in Kobe’s Chinatown.
The Location
The location is one of the best aspects of the hostel. The hostel is just a five-minute walk from JR Motomachi station and just a few metres outside of Kobe’s Chinatown. So, despite it being in Chinatown, it is plenty quiet for a good sleep. Being in Chinatown, there is plenty of food to be had right outside from the hostel. Furthermore, the harbour area with interesting sights and restaurants is about ten-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are clean and not too crowded (with six or so beds). Lockers are available for each person. The lockers are big, and might even fit medium-sized backpacks. The beds are good and private through a curtain and with all the conveniences like a light, power plug, and shelf available for each bed. The beds do still need to be made, but once made, it is a comfortable (though thin) bed.
The shared bathrooms are outside the dorm room and come with toiletries. There aren't many showers, but there are some washing tables outside the shower so you do not need to (should not) keep the shower occupied. Additionally, there are female-only bathrooms on the third floor.
Common Spaces
Unfortunately, there is no real common space in which to socialise. There are, though, some bar-like seats along the corridor, which suffice to sit and relax or work on a computer, but don’t bring the social aspect of a full common room. There is some more space to sit on the ground floor at the reception. Again, this is not a real social space, but the staff here are helpful and there are some flyers and folders to help you around. The tiny kitchen is also on the ground floor with free tea. There is even a single hotplate for some simple cooking. Also, uniquely, there is a Muslim prayer room.
Summary
The location and facilities are great. Guest House Kobe Nadeshikoya offers a good place to stay with comfortable beds and plenty of food nearby (and there is also an attached pizzeria with reasonably priced food). The price is reasonable and on the cheap side for Kobe, and is in fact quite good considering the facilities. While there isn’t much of a social common area, the common areas are sufficient. And if you aren’t expecting a big social space, this hostel is an excellent choice.
