Pepe's House is probably one of the best hostels. It has the friendliest owners -- a couple from Bogota, Colombia -- who run it together by personally interacting with each customer in a very friendly manner and who are always there to help you with any questions you may have. Plus, they actually have double beds in the dormitory, which easily makes this hostel rise to the top of the pack in terms of comfort.
The Location
Pepe's House is at the historical center of Cuenca, and also within walking distance to the intercity bus terminal. In about fifteen minutes, you can make it to the hostel from the terminal, or you can take a taxi. It is a safe area and close to a plenty of restaurants and cafes, as well as a few bars.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm can host four guests and has four double beds, which are easily the most comfortable any hostel can have. You will find an excess of pillows waiting for you on your bed, giving the place an extra cozy feeling. Additionally, there is a bedside table for each bed and a bedside lamp. There is a private bathroom inside the dorm, plus a sitting area with a TV. All areas of the hostel have excellent Wi-Fi access.
Common Spaces
There are small sitting areas on the second floor, but the main drawing point is the huge courtyard in the middle that is covered with a glass ceiling. This lets in a lot of sunlight while keeping the place warm and dry. There are several tables with umbrellas in the courtyard, where you can sit and relax during the day. This is also where the breakfast is served. There is no guest access to the kitchen, but they sell small snacks and drinks. Plus, coffee is always free for the guests to enjoy.
Summary
All in all, Pepe's House is amazing value. Included in the dorm price there is a small breakfast every morning and you can take an even bigger breakfast for a small additional fee. The owners are very enthusiastic about their hostel and they are very well traveled too, so you can expect a very understanding attitude toward the various needs of travelers. Thanks to the attractiveness of the common areas, plus the extra comfortable double beds in the dormitory, this hostel is easily the top choice in Cuenca.
