Milkman Hostel is an unpretentious budget accommodation that still manages to create a cool and welcoming atmosphere. While everything is old and battered, the rooftop with its amazing views and the common room with its beautiful wall painting and meditative music do have a certain charm to them.
The Location
The hostel is located in a quiet residential area in the north of Pushkar. As it's only five minutes away from the bus station, it can be a great choice if you are arriving late at night or leaving early in the morning. Moreover, as Pushkar is not too big, most attractions can be reached fast and easily from here -- the lake and main bazaar in ten minutes, the Brahma Temple in about fifteen, while it would take you around fifty minutes to the top of the hill on which the Savitri Temple is located. While the hostel is on a tiny street, it is really easy to find, as there are signs on light blue paper leading you there from many points nearby.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is situated on the top two floors of a residential building and the dorm room is on the very top. At first sight, you might be repulsed by the really old furniture and general chaotic atmosphere; the dorm has no door separating it from the terrace, which means that you are sleeping with lots of fresh air coming in. While many blankets are provided, you might want to take this aspect into consideration, especially if you are making a booking for the winter. There are three toilets and one bathroom on the other side of the terrace and these are more than enough for the maximum seven guests staying in the dorm. While these are also not too modern, they are relatively clean.
Common Spaces
There are three common areas -- one indoors, one outdoors, and one semi-outdoors. The rooftop area offers an amazing panorama over Pushkar and the surrounding mountains and is a really comfy place, complete with a hammock and mattresses. The indoor common area functions as a restaurant, but you are welcome here even if you do not buy anything. However, if you do eat here, make sure to check if rice or naan is included in your dish, as adding these might double the costs, which seems a bit like a clever way to compensate for the cheap price collected for the accommodation. This place has a really nice atmosphere and there is always nice meditative music playing. Last, but not least, there is an area with a swinging bed and a few chairs and pillows to sit on, which is also nice (even if it does not have a view).
Summary
All in all, Milkman is a great place to chill and meet some non-materialistic, hippy travelers. While the furniture is old, the atmosphere is great and you will find yourself wanting to sit on the rooftop well into the night soaking in the views and enjoying some great conversations.
