Community Hostel Reviews

There truly is a sense of community amongst the guests at Community Hostel in Quito. The atmosphere strikes just the right balance; it's sociable without the craziness of a party hostel. During the day, guests can enjoy free rooftop yoga classes, a free city walking tour, and complimentary tea and coffee. In the evening, high-quality dinners and varied social events create opportunities to get to know other travelers. The location within the Old City is perfect for sightseeing and the rooftop provides beautiful views over the city.

The Location

Community Hostel is located in the old part of the city, within walking distance of the historical sites. It is a couple of streets back from the main touristic areas and the street has a slightly rundown feel. It would not be safe to walk alone at night, but there are plenty of people around in the day.

The hostel is quite a distance from both the north and south bus stations, but can be reached by bus from both terminals (the name of the closest stop is "Plaza La Marin"). Alternatively, the C4 trole bus will take you from the south terminal (Terminal Quitumbe) to Plaza del Teatro, a five-minute walk from the hostel. If you're arriving from the airport, you can email the hostel to organise a paid airport pickup with their private driver.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorms are clean, bright, and spacious. The bunk beds are of a decent size and have comfy mattresses. There is excellent security, since each dorm requires a code to enter. There are also lockable drawers under each bed where you can store your valuables.

There are a number of clean and modern bathrooms spread across two floors. There are hot showers and nice touches such as complimentary towels, liquid soap, and paper hand towels. We feel these are some of the nicest bathrooms we've seen in a hostel of this price.

Common Spaces

Communal areas are spread over three floors. The first floor contains a clean, well-stocked communal kitchen as well as a TV area with DVDs and a book exchange. The second floor houses a long dining table with views out over the city. Breakfast and dinner is served here (at an extra cost). The meals are a little pricier than eating at a budget local restaurant, but are beautifully presented and of excellent quality. On the top floor sits a large rooftop with beautiful views out over the city. On some nights, a firepit is lit and there is a sociable atmosphere. On other nights, we had it all to ourselves, which is also enjoyable as the views over the city are stunning. Free rooftop yoga classes are held here on weekday mornings.

Free drinking water, tea, and coffee are available throughout the day. Wi-Fi is available in rooms and common areas. The hostel has an associated tour agency, which operates from beneath the hostel. They offer lots of information about travel in Ecuador, and city tours which aim to reflect the "community" concept by bringing business to local people. There is a free daily walking tour starting from here each day.

Summary

As suggested by the name, there truly is a community vibe at Community Hostel. Communal meals and events each evening encourage socialising and make this a great place to meet other travelers. The hostel is well-located for sightseeing in the day, and for enjoying sunset and city views from the rooftop in the evening!

• For a safe & secure ride, we have a private driver named Omar who can pick you up from the airport upon request. He will carry a car-full (4 people) for $25 total, and will wait for you and your party at the airport with a sign with our logo on it. if a reservation to get picked up by Omar is made by each party then the cost of the pickup would go down to $25 for each party since the reservations were done separatly. If you are interested in hiring Omar, please feel free to call us and set an appointment.
• If coming from elsewhere in Ecuador, you will arrive in Quito from either the north or south bus terminal. From either terminal, you can take the Eco Via (Metro) or Trole, the two main public transportation lines, into the city. For the Ecovia and Metro line please get off at the 'la Marin' bus stop, and for the trole bus please get off on the 'plaza del teatro' stop. If you are lost ask anyone for the Mercado Central or Coliseo Julio Cesar Hidalgo. We are the three story peach colored building right next to the palm tree
