Get to know Salmon (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Salmon.

Located in the Lemhi County Valley, Salmon is a small city with a middling population of only just more than three thousand people. Originally a tribal settlement community and home to the Lemhi Shoshone tribe, it is an historic site that has become a tourist destination in its own right.

Initially one the first landing spots of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, it is now the home of a strong cultural preserve that seeks to protect and display its rich history. Due to its cultural and historical significance, Salmon has become home to the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural, and Educational Center, named after Sacajawea, the Native American female party member of the Lewis and Clark team. If you’re looking for a historically rich vacation spot that is immersed in breathtaking scenery and rich Native American culture, Salmon is the place to be.

Salmon is a hotbed of historic sites that are a must-see; among them are the Meriwether Lewis’ Campsite and the landing site of the Lewis and Clark expedition team, which are now unofficially considered a cultural heritage site by locals and tourists alike. Salmon is not all about seeing history however, as it also allows visitors to experience history first hand with river canoeing and rafting excursions made available to the public. Idaho River Journeys and Solitude River Trips offer some of the best tours of the famed rivers in Salmon and makes for the perfect meeting-spot to make new friends and acquaintances.

For those who have more of an intellectual bend, the Sacajawea Interpretative, Cultural, and Educational Center houses some many relics from Salmon’s past, and serves as a repository for living history. Another great museum that you shouldn’t miss is the Lemhi Historical Museum, which features wonderful exhibits and great souvenirs. If you’re more of the active type of tourist, the Salmon Valley Golf Course, the Geertson Creek Trail Rides, and Rawhide Outfitters should provide you with just the right kind of action you need.

After a long day of touring and trekking, you’ll love Salmon’s grub spots, which offer some of the best and most affordable grub to be had in the area. Because this is a highly visited place, booking your Salmon hostel reservation in advance regardless of the season is a must for an easier and hassle-free trip.
