Get to know Kiruna (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Kiruna.

Kiruna, famous for being the prominent town in Swedish Lapland, shares its borders with Finland and Norway and is the northern-most town in Sweden. Kiruna is also home to the world's biggest iron ore mine and European Space Agency, ESA. Kiruna is a moving city -- in few years you might not see the city in the place where it is now, as extended iron ore mining is forcing the city structures to move to a new place. In wintertime, sub-zero temperatures are quite normal; as it is away from a coast, temperatures are much lower than nearby towns Lulea and Narvik.

While staying at a Kiruna hostel, there are many activities on offer in the surrounding areas. You can take a tour to world's largest iron ore mine; LKAB, the company that operates the mine, conducts a daily tour to the iron ore mine, both in Swedish and English. During wintertime, they require a minimum of fiftenn participants for the tour to happen. Another fun activity is a husky ride or a visit to a reindeer farm or with the Sami people. Kiruna provides many guided tours for various activities so that you can have a relaxed and beautiful experience in the lapland.

Every day two trains leave from Kiruna to Narvik (in Norway). This route, termed as the Arctic Circle Line (the entire route is in the Arctic Circle), offers breathtaking views of both Swedish Lapland and Norwegian Fjords and culminates at the port city of Narvik. Abisko National Park, where you can experience nature at its natural form, is a prominent tourist spot owing to the large fauna and its views over one of the largest lakes in Sweden. Get out of city and do some camping to catch a glimpse of nature's colorful wonder in the sky, Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.
