Puerto Escondido is home to world-class surfing and most people who venture here are out to catch a good wave or to learn to surf. The surf lessons and board hire are reasonably inexpensive but if you are going to stay here for a couple of weeks, it may well be worth your while purchasing your own board if this is your primary reason for being here.
The food in this region is amazing, and again reasonably inexpensive. You will find a large number of restaurants and corner shops in Puerto Escondido everywhere, especially lined up along the beach so food will always be close by.
Puerto Escondido itself is broken up into different neighbourhoods. Zicatela is the major part of the town and the main beach. You will find the streets here lined with clothing shops and other souvenir shops as well as food and water supplies. Most of the Puerto Escondido hostels are located in Zicatela. Some hostels in Puerto Escondido however are located at smaller beaches on either side of Zicatela like La Punta, which is the most popular surf beach here. Areas like La Punta have not got the typical tourist souvenir shops but do have the food and board hire that is easy accessible.
Even if your Puerto Escondido hostel is further out of the Zicatela area, you can get picked up by a blue truck from the highway that picks up passengers for a small fee and drives you to wherever along the highway you want to be dropped off, which makes getting around very easy and affordable.
