Situated just off the coast of Playa del Carmen, in the beautiful Mexican state of Quintana Roo, is the large island of Cozumel, Mexico. Despite its size, Cozumel is largely undeveloped, consisting mainly of national park. With the exception of its biggest town, San Miguel, there is little in the way of big city life.

That said, the town of Santa Miguel is well set up for tourists. There are plenty of activities that tourists can enjoy on the island. Although the main attraction without a doubt is Cozumel's spectacular scuba diving. Just off the coast of the island is a barrier reef, which will surely delight any diver. Many people opt to do diving courses here. There is also another snorkeling and diving spot, where it is possible to see eerie statues submerged just beneath the water's surface.

If diving is not for you, another popular activity on the island is to rent a scooter, and complete the seventy-kilometer-long circuit. Be sure to take some snacks with you and take your time stopping off at some of Cozumel's pretty beaches along the way.

Cozumel makes a nice and easy day trip from Playa del Carmen, as ferries run frequently throughout the day and up to 11 p.m. It is possible to see the island in a day, however many people choose to stay for a night or two.
