This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Glendalough.

Guess what? Glendalough is also named and spelled Gleann Da Loch - It is the same destination. Goodbye confusion.

Glendalough is located in the southeast corner of the Republic of Ireland on the territory of the Wicklow National Park and is one of the most popular touristic sites of the country. The name of Glendalough means "the valley of the two lakes" and this name already suggests the natural wonder that this glacial valley offers to visitors. However, the majestic lakes, lush green nature, and spectacular scenery only account for half of the charm of this place, with the other half coming from the rich history and fascinating Celtic heritage that can be found nestled amongst the breathtaking scenery.

Glendalough is home to one of the most outstanding and significant historic sites of Ireland -- the monastic ruins of the Early Medieval settlement founded by St. Kevin in the sixth century. The most impressive remains of the site are all located near the shore of the lower lake and include the Gateway, which is unique all over Ireland; the thirty-meter-high Round Tower; the Cathedral, which is the largest piece of the settlement; the Priest's House, and St. Kevin's Church. However, several other religious constructions are scattered all along the lakes, with the Reefert Church, the Temple-na-Skellig, St. Kevin's Cell, St. Kevin's Bed, and the Caher being of primary interest near the upper lake. Moreover, an abandoned miners' village from the nineteenth century near the upper lake offers a glimpse into the more recent history of the region as well.

Glendalough is a place that will definitely enchant you with its magical tranquility and mysterious air. Therefore, a visit to the area cannot be complete without a longer stroll along one of the several walking paths that the National Park has to offer and a visit to the boardwalk that leads you right above the upper lake is a definite must-do if you are keen to have the best photo shoots of the place. A Glendalough hostel is a great base to explore everything on offer in this lovely area.
