Get to know Rostock (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Rostock.

Rostock lies in the north German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It stretches along the Warnow River to the Baltic Sea and it is particularly known for its large port, hanseatic architecture, and one of the oldest universities in the world.

Even though there are nice Rostock hostels all over the city, the best place to look for one is in the old city centre, particularly around the Neuer Markt (New Market Square), or perhaps somewhere around the Warnemünde, but be prepared to pay a bit more in that area. Each of these locations will give you the benefits of easily reaching some of the main tourist attractions, although getting around the city is not really a problem anyway, due to the extensive public transport system. Top sights include Marienkirche (St. Mary's church, built in the thirteenth century), the already mentioned Neuer Markt Square, Zoo Rostock, Kulturhistorisches museum (Cultural History Museum), The University of Rostock, Volkstheater Rostock (Rostock People's Theatre), and of course Warnemünde seaside resort and its famous lighthouse, which especially attracts plenty of visitors with its fireworks and light show on a New Year's Eve.

Along with the large sandy beaches and the lighthouse, a lot of attention in Warnermünde also receives the canal Alter strom (Old Channel) with its various restaurants and pubs, as well as the old town, where you can find some truly charming traditional fishermen houses. And in case you would like to do a little shopping, various shopping malls and stores throughout the city will definitely take care of your needs.

Besides the good public transport network within the city, Rostock also offers solid connections with Hamburg and Berlin (two nearest international airports), as well as with Denmark, Finland, and Sweden through its ferry service.

Despite not being a particularly large city, Rostock frequently holds different concerts, events, and festivals, therefore it is certainly never boring and offers something for pretty much everyone.
