Get to know Kyustendil (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Kyustendil.

Kyustendil is a Bulgarian spa resort but not many foreigners know it due to poor promotion, so you can be sure that you will not meet crowds of foreign tourists (maybe even not so many Bulgarian tourists). You can go skiing, do spa procedures, visit archeological sites, or taste fresh fruit or local drinks. Here is the Hisarlaka fortress –- the oldest known in Europe -- however, it is not reconstructed and in poor condition. Other interesting sights are the Mosque, the Pirgova Tower, and the Zoo.

If you visit Kyustendil in the winter and you like skiing, it is recommended that you go to the nearby Osogovo Mountain. There are a few slopes where you can ski and a lift. If you are a ski fan, there are many options for you as Bansko and Borovets are less than one hundred twenty kilometers from Kyustendil. Kyustendil is only ninety kilometers from Sofia and you can get there by train (quite slow but cheap) or bus. Blagoevgrad is also less than sixty kilometers away. Serbia and Macedonia are also quite close to Kyustendil and you can visit these countries, as well.

Hostels in Kyustendil are not many but have a great location; you will be in the very center of the city next to Park Hisarluka. Prices for hostels in Kyustendil are low. Both the train and bus stations are about a kilometer from the hostels in Kyustendil. You can walk or take a taxi, as streets are small, addresses are not easy to find, and taxis are cheap. You may even ask the landlord to meet you.
