Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Meghalaya

Meghalaya is a state in the northeast end of India. In Sanskrit, its name means “abode of clouds.” It is the wettest area in India and its main industry is commercial forestry. Since this state is not geared particularly toward tourism, accommodations are few and far between. The good news is that Meghalaya hostels tend to be very clean and provide a welcoming vibe. As is common in less touristy areas, hostel-type accommodations call themselves many different names such as “guest house.” You will need to have a discerning eye or do some research online to pinpoint the Meghalaya hostels you wish to stay at.

In the city of Cherrapunji (Cherrapunjee), you will find many points of interest for your itinerary. Fortunately, here you will also find hostels to settle into for a rejuvenating night’s sleep. One of the most acclaimed spots in the city is the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. It is located on a long walk between Tyrna and Nongriat villages.

A living root bridge is created using pliable roots of certain trees which are then anchored to the other side of a body of water. Stones and sticks are used to add stability to the bridge. It takes a descent of about 3,000 steps to reach the Double Decker Bridge. It is made of two levels of crossing. Beneath it, you will find a natural pool of clear, turquoise water. Once you have crossed the bridges, you can admire the waterfalls and take a dip in the natural pools. Thankfully, you will be able to find hostel style accommodations nearby in the village to rest your legs before you head back again.

About a two-hour trip from Cherrapunji, you will come upon Shillong. This is another great area to find a hostel in Meghalaya. In this city you can learn so much about the region at the Don Bosco Center for Indigenous Cultures. Learn about Meghalaya history, try some northeast Indian cuisine in the cafeteria, and go up on the roof for the skywalk.

In Shillong, you also can visit the college area of Laitmukhrah where hostels abound. In this place you can visit the All Saints Church as well as find some good places to eat and have tea.

About a 45-minute drive away, you can visit Laitlum Canyons, meaning “end of hills.” Located in the Khasi Hills, here you will have beautiful photo opportunities as you take in the hills, gorges, and villages.
