Piya Hotel/Hostel Reviews

It's not every day you get to sleep in a historical building, but if you stay at Piya Hotel/Hostel, you can! It's a very sweet hostel run by wonderful people, and the house is one hundred fifty years old. The walls have stories to tell ... and so does the owner!

The Location

The hostel is located on a small quiet alley, not far from the historical old city of Sultanahmet. You get the perks of being a bit away from the persistent merchants and loud bars and restaurants, but they're all just a short walk away. At night it's very quiet here, and be aware that there is a midnight curfew at the hostel! The place is not hard to find and there are many public transportation options around. It's a pretty great location.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Obviously, in such an old building, as you can expect, everything is very old. The walls and floors are thin and old and you can hear everyone's moves, but there is also something magical about that. The rooms are not too big but not too small either. The beds are comfy enough, but not suitable for sitting. There are no lockers, but you can leave your valuables with reception. There are some power outlets, but they have a will of their own -- sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Same goes for the Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are shared and there are a few of them around. They are actually in a rather fine shape, better than we expected. They're not very clean, but they're convenient enough.

Common Spaces

There is a pleasant dining area where breakfast is served. You can hang out there all day and there is Turkish tea and coffee for sale. Prices are reasonable. There is no guest kitchen, but a Turkish-style breakfast is served in the mornings and it's quite tasty and filling. As the Wi-Fi doesn't always work well, it's a great place to socialize with other travelers, read a book, or learn some Turkish from the friendly owner. There are also many cats around!

Summary

Piya Hotel/Hostel is a very sweet and special place. Everyone is very easygoing and friendly and the pink historical building has such a character -- it's definitely worth a visit! We would be happy to return.
