Black Sand Beachhouse is a small hotel/hostel directly on the beach in downtown Monterrico with one twelve-bed, air-conditioned dorm and private rooms. During our three-day stay, the Wi-Fi was not working. The property can be reached through a little pedestrian street from Calle Principal.
The Location
The hostel is well located directly on the beach within easy walking distance of numerous shops, supermarkets, and restaurants. The property is so close to the water that the sea reaches the hammocks at high tide. The neighbourhood is lively and safe during the day, but it is not recommended to walk on the beach alone at night and some properties have security guards.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The single dorm room has triple metal bunk beds with curtains for each bunk. Each bed also has two electrical sockets but no light. The room is air conditioned and kept at a refreshing twenty-five degrees Celsius. Furthermore there is a large fan on the ceiling. There are large sturdy lockers (bring a padlock) in the dorm but the upper row of lockers is hard to reach. The floor is simple concrete with a large rug. Sheets are clean and the mattresses are comfortable.
The en suite bathroom has a shower with cold water and a large rain-shower head. There is are some hooks and towels racks, but they are often occupied, and thus the floor is the only option for putting your clothes while taking a shower.
Common Spaces
There are tables and benches/chairs in the reception area where there is also a restaurant. Breakfast is included in the dorm price. There are a couple of hammocks, and hanging chairs on the ground floor, as well as loungers and a small swimming pool on the first floor. The book exchange had a total of one book and there is music playing from about 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The place has a friendly beach vibe about it, and you easily start talking with fellow travelers in the laid-back atmosphere. There is no kitchen available for use, but the restaurant serves food, although with slightly expensive prices.
Summary
This is a nice, laid-back place to stay for a couple of days while exploring Monterrico and you can get a good night's sleep in the air-conditioned dorm.
