Bike&Bed was created by a local guy who traveled a lot himself and who wanted to use his experience to devise the perfect abode for backpackers coming his way. And he succeeded -- here everything is allowed; everything serves the interest of travelers; and whenever you can think of something that is missing, he will soon add it! Bike&Bed is the ultimate place to chill, because once you arrive here, you will never want to leave!
The Location
Bike&Bed is located in the center of Thakhek, just a few hundred metres away from the relaxing riverbank walk next to the Mekong. On the other side, you have Thailand already, and sitting on the shore, you can admire the many beautiful temples lining the shore on the other side. While the bus terminal is quite far away from here, it is still worth booking your accommodation in this part of the town, as in the one near the bus station, you do not have much at all. The hostel itself is in a residential area, so guests are asked to keep the noise down after 10 p.m. in order not to disturb the neighbours.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers three small dorm rooms with either four or six beds in each. The bunks are really modern and in a great condition and the rooms are comfortable and spacious. They are cooled by air conditioning and over the windows there are thick curtains, which block out all the light. There is plenty of places where you can unpack and there are electronic plugs with your bed. A new addition of the hostel is the treehouse outside, which offers a five-mattress dorm with mosquito nets out in the fresh air. It can be a real treat for those who are done with confined spaces and artificially controlled temperatures.
The bathrooms are at the back of the hostel and are huge; spacious; and offer a variety of shower gels, shampoos, and other products for free use. While other hostels discourage people from washing their clothes in the sink, this place even offers hand-wash gel for your convenience.
Common Spaces
The amount and variety of common spaces are just great! All around the house, there are benches, chairs, hammocks, and seats for you; there is a guitar that you can play; and there are separate smoker and nonsmoker areas. There is a massive common area inside as well with sofas and a mini kitchen where you can make tea and coffee for free all through the day. However, there is a bigger kitchen outside with a proper stove that you are welcome to use as well. The hostel also offers a give and take corner as well as a book exchange and reading corner.
Summary
This place does an excellent job at making you feel at home. The owner goes out of his way to help you, whatever you query might be, and from the wide variety of options available for things to do in the hostel and places to chill here, you are guaranteed to find something you will love no matter how long you are staying.
