The Townhouse is a relaxed party hostel that focuses more on the party than on any other essential travelers' amenities. A friendly cat has the run of the property, and free breakfast (either in the form of an omelet with toast or pancakes with bananas and syrup) is served between 8:30 and 10 a.m.
The Location
The hostel is located in downtown Granada, three blocks west of the central park (Parque Central). The neighbourhood is residential with the occasional shop and there are bars and restaurants in easy walking distance. As there is a bar right next door, it can get a bit loud.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The Townhouse offers both private and dorm rooms. The dorms have wooden and metal double bunk beds and are facing the street. Thus one can hear cars and horse-drawn carriages coming by in the fairly busy street. The beds do not have privacy curtains, fans, electrical sockets, or small lights. There is one ceiling fan. Dorms are spacious, but bunk beds are not high enough to sit up in the lower bunks. Mattresses are comfortable and sheets clean, although the latter have the annoying tendency to come off the mattress during the night. There are some electrical sockets in the dorm, but the lighting is poor and the Wi-Fi does not work in the dorms or in the common area immediately outside the dorms. There are some mosquitoes.
Dorm doors as well as the hostel entrance are not locked, and there are a fair bit of non-guests coming by in the evenings to drink at the bar. There are large lockers in the common area outside the dorms and you are not allowed to bring any kind of backpacks into the dorm.
There are a couple of bathrooms and showers around the property. They are fairly clean with only cold water and decent water pressure, but there is no space to put away your clothes while showering.
Common Spaces
There is one large common area around a courtyard with a pool, a bar, and an open kitchen. There is a variety of seating with hammocks, couches, barstools, and tables. Wi-Fi works well but only close to the bar where the router is located. There are barely any electrical sockets in the common area.
A large book exchange provides plenty of English books and travel guides. The large pool is clean and refreshing. A lot of the courtyard is covered in white gravel, which the resident cat unfortunately uses as its personal litter box, so it is worth staying on the paved areas. Furthermore there is a small shallow pond. The kitchen is open and only equipped with the basics and unfortunately with a very poorly designed sink for washing up. Food in the fridge is not labeled and liable to get thrown out by the staff. The bar sells drinks and generally plays (live) music until midnight. Overall this hostel has a very social atmosphere.
Summary
The Townhouse is a party hostel in downtown Granada that lacks some of the basic amenities such as Wi-Fi throughout the property and electrical sockets, but provides a decent free breakfast.
