We booked Moustache Hostel, Varanasi, not realizing that the area this far south would be so quiet. At first were thought it was too far away from the central area, but we soon discovered how advantageous the location is.
The Location
Initially you might think you’ve taken a wrong turn, since there is no signage out in the street to direct you. Just find Ram Janki Temple and navigate round the back of the temple. The entrance of the hostel is behind the temple.
After a long day of exploring in the chaos that is Varanasi, it is wonderful to return to a peaceful and quiet hostel. It’s a short, four-hundred-meter or six-minutes walk from Assi Ghat. There are a couple of very good English-style restaurants/cafes nearby. Everything is in walking distance, but if you want transport, you just need to step out into the street. There are tons of rickshaws eager to take you anywhere you want to go.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The eight-bed dorm room is on the second floor. The room is large, with plenty of room for guests to move around. The beds have sturdy metal frames, and the mattresses are comfortable. Privacy curtains allow guests to close off their beds from others in the room. Each bed is equipped with a fan, two electric sockets, the brightest reading light, and a little shelf. The fan is extremely noisy and disturbing, though. Under the bottom bunk beds are large lockers, which will easily accommodate a big backpack. You need your own lock.
This hostel does not provide toiletries or towels (towels can be rented). The bathroom is en suite and is a large, fairly soundproof room. At the basin, there is hand wash and they also provide toilet paper. The whole bathroom is wet after showering, but they provide a floor cleaning tool to sweep the water toward the draining hole. There is a ventilation switch, which quickly dries the bathroom out. Next to the basin is a large area to put your towel, toiletries. There are also hooks behind the door.
Common Spaces
The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They showed us to our room and then sent a young boy in to clean the bathroom and empty the dustbins.
There is a large common room on the first floor, with comfortable seating; this room serves as TV room and lounge as well as the kitchen area. Food is served from the kitchen and free tea is provided somewhere in the late afternoon. There are also plenty of electric sockets, so working on a laptop is easy and comfortable.
Down the corridor is a bookshelf with many wonderful secondhand books as well as many board games. Further down the corridor is the use of a free computer. At the very top is a large rooftop area. Although there is no seating available, it’s a great place to view the city or even do some stargazing at night.
Summary
We definitely recommend this hostel. Everything is ten out of ten and the atmosphere is homey and comfortable.
