Hostal San Benito. Zona Rosa is a brand-new hostel located in the San Benito area of San Salvador, which is also one of the richest and safest neighborhoods. It offers a good quality accommodation and a nice lounge area where you can relax during the day or in the evening.
The Location
As mentioned, the location is in the safest area of San Salvador, San Benito. It is a quiet street with a few restaurants and some armed guards outside, which gives security to the area. The center is about twenty minutes away by taxi, depending on the traffic, or forty-five minutes away with public buses (there is one change needed). When coming from El Tunco, the bus stop is fifteen minutes away with a taxi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is well maintained and it seems more like a hotel than a hostel. Rooms have bunk beds and there is usually a bathroom for each room. Rooms are not very spacious, but mattresses are great and comfortable.
Lockers are also available. A negative note is that there is no electricity plug for each bed, so it is a bit uncomfortable to charge devices. The bathroom is alright and shower is spacious, but hot water is not available. Rooms and bathroom are clean and the staff cares about keeping the spaces clean.
Common Spaces
There is a big room in the entrance, next to the reception with sofas and chairs and tables. In addition, there is a small garden with a hammock and other tables where you can eat or relax in the evening. There is also another area with a hammock and a few sofas at the end of the property, which is mostly used by customers that have private rooms, as these are located right there.
The hostel has also a kitchen, which guests can use free of charge. However the equipment (pans, pots, cutlery) is not enough and cookers are very small and there are only two, so if more people need to cook together there is a queue. No free breakfast is provided. The door outside is always locked, so staff have to always come and open it.
The vibe is really quiet and it is hard to meet other people. It is definitely not a party or social place and it has no activities organized or any kind of atmosphere.
Summary
San Salvador has a reputation of a dangerous city but this hostel makes people feel totally safe. The location is in one of the safest areas, the door is always locked and the reception is open twenty-four/seven. The hostel is also very well maintained and guests can have a quiet time relaxing and enjoying. Something that is a bit annoying is that there are a lot of mosquitos and it is not uncommon to find bugs here.
