Zostel Chennai is a small and bright hostel with the choice of mixed dorms or a private double, all with en suite. The property is spread over three floors, with ample common space, including a roof terrace and kitchen.
Rooms are air conditioned and good Wi-Fi is available throughout. There is free tea, coffee, and drinking water available any time. Breakfast is not included.
The Location
The hostel is in T Nagar, which is famous for its shopping and markets, though they are not exactly on your doorstep -- it would take you about forty minutes to walk to the action. Or there is a bus stop just a five-minute walk from the hostel with links to the markets or to other main bus stops, where it is possible to grab a cheap local bus to other destinations in Tamil Nadu. Around the hostel, you will find a couple of small tea/snack stalls, or after a ten-minute walk, you will find other shops and restaurants. The area is pleasant, quiet, leafy, and feels safe. The hostel is easy to find with the use of Google Maps, or grab an Uber or Ola.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm is spacious and clean. The beds each have a power point, light and comfortable mattress. There are lockers (large enough to store your whole bag inside) in the rooms, which is good, as you are not provided with a key to the room.
The bathrooms are probably the only letdown in this hostel, as they are quite old and the standards of cleanliness are not in keeping with the rest of the hostel. They are basic and the water gets hot enough; though there is plenty of space for your toiletries, they could really use some clothing hooks. In addition to the en suite bathrooms in the rooms, there are additional bathrooms located on the ground and first floors.
Common Spaces
The ground floor features the main common room, with a large wall-spanning sofa, TV, board games, and book exchange. The first floor has a large open space, though it's lacking in seating other than a bean bag. The roof terrace is a lovely space to enjoy, it is mostly sheltered too, which is a definite benefit so you can enjoy the sun without getting burnt. On the ground floor you will find the kitchen, which features a stove and microwave, plus lots of Indian-style food trays and cups.
This hostel attracts a young crowd of both backpackers and local tourists, with a nice, social atmosphere.
