Sa Sa Lao is a paradise for the lovers of nature! The eco-hostel was created not only keeping the interests of nature as the primary guiding principle but also to give guests the experience of living in the Laotian forest. The buildings and furniture are all made using natural materials and the territory of the hostel encompasses a huge green area with palm trees, exotic plants, and cosy chilling areas in between.
The Location
Let's admit it, the location of Sa Sa Lao is not great. It is far from the centre in a residential area where you will struggle to find food and supplies. While the hostel functions as a restaurant as well, its prices are not for budget travelers. When picking the location, the primary consideration is to provide a place where you can be away from it all. However, it is probably not in UNESCO top-prize winner Luang Prabang that you would want to escape from all there is to explore! Moreover, despite the hidden location, it is quite loud from early in the morning with the neighbours doing their business. On the positive side though, the hostel provides a free shuttle into the city once every morning, and the riverside location is quite unique and provides space for things like outside massage tables and bonfires at night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is made up of numerous huts built in the traditional style. Each hut has two floors and about six bunks inside, which makes the interiors extremely spacious. The bunks are made of bamboo and look really cool and authentic. The only ventilation is the wind blowing through the huts and one fan per room, but the temperature is quite pleasant at night. The beds do have mosquito nets, but do not be surprised by some unexpected visitors like small insects ... after all, the main thing here is coexistence with nature! The rooms are en suite and the bathrooms are really nice and stylish as well. The hostel tries to provide an opportunity for local people who are out of jobs, which is a nice initiative, but do not expect much from the staff information- or language-wise!
Common Spaces
The common areas are what make this hostel so unique -- the chance to hide away in a hammock or admire the river view from a comfy wooden sunbathing chair. The centre of the hostel is a large, semi-open restaurant that serves you food well into the night. Here, a variety of board games can be borrowed or you can enjoy the mini library. For such a remote location, it is not great that breakfast is not included in the price though. In the huge garden, you will find three decks with different kind of seating facilities, but each is great for socialising as well as some quiet time. The place has a sandy beach area where bonfires are often lit at night, but swimming is not recommended.
Summary
If you are in a hurry to discover everything Luang Prabang has to offer, then forget about this place, as it will get quite stressful to do your sightseeing from here. However, if you need a few days to yourself and you would like to enjoy a relaxing, natural environment, you will love this place. While there are still certain things to be improved, all in all, it is high quality accommodation for a reasonable price.
