Hostal Catedral Merida doesn't seem like anything special at first, but with its wonderful location, comfortable surroundings, and setting plus an excellent kitchen, it is worth the stay.
The Location
With its location right on the corner of Mérida's main plaza, it really doesn't get any better, and it makes it pretty easy to find. Down in the main square are a lot of the main attractions of Mérida, such as the cathedral and some of the museums as well as a lot of general social activity once the sun goes down and all the street vendors emerge and the restaurants pull their tables and chairs out onto the sidewalk. There are more restaurants, street-food vendors, corner stores, and cafes on the streets leading away from the centre, meaning there is plenty of stuff to try and check out! The buses stations are within a mile, so walking is an option or a cheap taxi ride, and you could park on the street outside the hostel if need be.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are the only room type on offer and they are simply divided into male only, female only, and mixed with in-room lockers. There aren't locks on the doors, but since there is security on the door at night and a receptionist at the counter twenty-four/seven, this isn't too much of a concern. Rooms are comfortable with nighttime air conditioning, and clean with plenty of room for luggage placement and not stepping on the neighbour's toes.
Bathrooms are pretty amazing, they're kinda like a local pool's or gym's bathrooms but really nice. Showers are huge with plenty of space and hanging options both inside the shower and the shower area itself. Everything is spacious, clean, and a little too nice for a hostel but that's nothing to complain about.
Common Spaces
Common spaces are limited to a really nice and well-stocked kitchen with adjacent dining hall featuring one very long table that seats about twenty people and a sitting area in the reception. The hostel is pretty low-key, but the common areas are fun places to just chill in and potentially meet other travelers.
Summary
This is a nice hostel, nice enough to maybe tempt you to spend an extra day in Mérida.
