Mossel Bay is one of those destinations in South Africa that gives you so much choice in accommodation, it's hard to know what to pick, but Shark Shack Backpackers is a good choice among the many options available for both international and domestic tourists and budget travelers and backpackers in this prime holiday spot.
The Location
Shark Shack is located on Marsh Street, the main road running through Mossel Bay and the center of shopping. Marsh Street has a lot of bar, cafe, and restaurant choices, and from Shark Shack, you won't have to venture too far. There is a bar next door and another opposite and a small cafe also next door. The lighthouse and nature trail are just a ten-minute walk away and the beach is about fifteen minutes away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This small place has just six rooms. The private rooms have a toilet and shower inside, but they are very small and the toilet is only separated from the bedroom by a heavy curtain. The dorms have four beds each and are comfortable. Two of them are on the side of the house that backs onto the next door bar, so it might get noisy on holiday weekends. There are a couple of power points in the rooms and some cupboard space. One of the dorms also has an easy chair. The dorms share clean bathrooms and there is twenty-four-hour hot water. Hand soap and towels are provided.
Common Spaces
The main common area is divided into a kitchen/dining room and a sitting room. There's not a lot of space, but the kitchen is well equipped with a kettle, toaster, microwave, mini-grill, four-ring gas cooker, and fridge. There is a wooden dining table here and lots of cupboards with pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery enough for a full house. The other half of the room is the sitting area with two sofas and a cushioned chair. There's a coffee table and a flat-screen TV mounted high on the wall. The walls are given over to guests to decorate with messages and drawings; it's a nice, homey touch. Free Wi-Fi is provided and the signal is good throughout the small house. The manager offers free shuttles to and from the bus stop. There is plenty of information on offer for trips and activities around Mossel Bay.
Summary
This is an excellent choice that is aimed specifically at international backpackers. As it is in the heart of the bar and restaurant area of Mossel Bay, it always has a buzz and a good atmosphere. The beds are very reasonably priced and the place is spotlessly clean.
