 National Museum

Lusaka is a great introduction to Southern Africa’s great oasis of tranquility and beauty, Zambia. Whether this is the starting point to your visit to Victoria Falls, South Luangwa National Park, or simply transit en route to Malawi, Lusaka allows for a relaxing few days. The hostel scene here is high quality, with many offering air-conditioning or fans -- and of course, great safety assurances.

No visit to Lusaka would be complete without exploring the legacies of its post-Colonial independence era. The National Museum, High Court, and Presidential Palace all give some insight into the significant role Lusaka played in Zambian politics since the mid-twentieth century. Shoppers will relish in the exciting things on offer on Cairo Street, whilst history buffs will enjoy the street names that allude to a bygone era of international politics. For directions and transport options, just ask at your Lusaka hostel!

For those coming off safari or having volunteered deep in Zambia’s villages, Lusaka will give you a chance to relax and indulge a bit. Your Lusaka hostel can easily link you up with some great international dining options, first-class bars, and extensive shopping centers. As Lusaka is fairly spread out, Lusaka’s hostels are also spread out. Don’t fear, this simply means you will have the chance to explore some of Lusaka’s inner suburbs, with all the trappings and street-side markets that make Africa so unique.

If Lusaka is your first stop in Zambia, your Lusaka hostel will certainly be able to get you in touch with some operators to get you moving on the road in no time. Most Lusaka hostels will be able to recommend safari operators, or simply the best bus companies to help you get to your next stop!

Lusaka hostels tend to fill up quickly during the high season (May to July), so book ahead if traveling during this time. Also, if you’re planning on traveling with a large group, it’s always advisable to book well in advance.
