Get to know Montego Bay (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Montego Bay.

The second largest city in Jamaica, Montego Bay is sometimes called MoBay by its residents. It is a major tourism hotspot in the country. The city is located near a major port and has hills, palm trees, and golden, sandy beaches. There are also many plantations dating back to the colonial era in Montego Bay. Most of the beaches and plantations are open to the public, but some belong to the hotels by the beach.

Staying in Montego Bay is not hard at all. There are many hostels located near the beaches and the hilltop residences. The hostels are typically very affordable, and the food at them is very delectable. Staff of the hostels in Montego Bay are friendly and welcoming. White and gold beaches are in close proximity to most of the residences.

While here, take a trip down to the Doctor’s Cave Beach and Bathing Club. It has mineral spring waters that were once declared as having healing powers by a British doctor. This is one of the main tourist attractions of the city. The beach tends to be a little crowded because of the number of tourists on it, but it is still an experience worth seeing.

If you want a truly magical experience, visit the Rose Hall Great House, which is a plantation house built in the 1700s. Annie Palmer, the owner, was also called the White Witch of Rose Hall and ruled her slaves with black magic powers (according to legend). Learn the tale of her dominion and her husband’s tragic fate.

Another restored mansion in Montego Bay is the Bellefield Great House and Gardens. It is a completely refurbished manor house with surrounding plantations, complete with a sugar mill on the grounds. Visit here for a Jamaican lunch in the traditional style and a great tour of the grounds. The entire city is a slice out of a history book.
