Siofok is located in the west of Hungary in the county of Somogy. It is situated on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, the biggest freshwater lake of Central Europe that locals normally refer to as "the Hungarian Sea" and its name derives from the fact that this is the place where the River Sió leaves the lake.
Siofok is often called the capital of the Balaton, as this city is one of the most popular beach resorts of the area. It is especially popular amongst young people who are attracted here by the great beaches, the nightlife, and the amount of festivals nearby.
The beach of Siofok can be divided into two parts according to which side of the Sió Canal it is located on. To the east is the so-called Gold Coast, and to the west is the Silver Coast. Most of the best beaches and entertainment facilities are located on the Gold Coast, including the most famous beach of the city, which has been named Coke Club Beach. Although these beaches can only be entered after paying an entrance fee, further along the east coast, there is a beach that is free to enter and on the beaches of the Silver Coast, you do not have to pay either.
Once on the beach, make sure you try the traditional "lángos," a beachside snack of fried pastry with sour cream and cheese that is so popular here. Another typical Hungarian thing to do on the beach is to rent a water-bicycle, a fun water vehicle that can hold about six passengers and normally has a waterslide on its back.
The city can be reached easiest by car or by train -- from Budapest, it will not take you more than two hours to get here via whichever means of transportation you choose. It should be easy to reach your Siofok hostel, which can be a great base for your visit to this scenic area.
