Get to know Matane (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Matane.

One of the larger cities on the Gaspe Peninsula, Matane is famous in the area for its seafood. Most of the commercial fishing boats here go out after shrimp, others for salmon and other fish. Whether eating out or eating in, you will find that the prices here for seafood are very competitive.

The town itself expands across quite a large area and getting around is difficult if you do not have a car. The hostels in Matane are a small way out of the Centre-Ville but still close to the main road entering the city center. Ask at your Matane hostel for your closest food and supply stores for things that you may need during your stay here. If you do not have a car, you can get here on the Orleans Express bus that leaves from the Gaspe Peninsula or Rimouski twice daily.

Driving into Matane, you will see a variety of themed souvenir stores in the shapes of boats and whales that are cute to visit. In the city centre, you will find all of the amenities that you may need, such as banks, that you may not be able to find further out on the Gaspe Peninsula. The main city center is based on the inlet from the St. Lawrence River and there is an island park there that has some nice artistic pieces and a kids playground that is nice for relaxing or having lunch. For other activities and things to see in Matane, visit the tourist office down by the lighthouse for more information.
