Get to know Grampians (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Grampians.

Guess what? Grampians is also named and spelled The Grampian Mountains and Halls Gap - It is the same destination. Goodbye confusion.

The Grampians is located approximately four hours north west of Melbourne. There are some shuttle bus companies that run on a daily basis from Melbourne to the Grampians if you don't have a car. The best way to explore the entire region of the park though is to have a hire car, given that the national park covers quite an extensive area.

The largest town within The Grampians National Park is Halls Gap and you will find most of your basic amenities here. The hostels in The Grampians are located just a short walk out of Halls Gap, so you will have access to the things you will need during your stay.

The most popular activity in The Grampians is bush walking. The Pinnacle walking trail is the must-do that every person visiting The Grampians does -- climb to the summit of the mountain with overhanging rocks that overlook the town of Halls Gap and the national park. The views from here are spectacular. It can be considered a part of the Wonderland Loop, which will take you down the mountain in a different way than you came up and through the parks' very own "Grand Canyon." For those looking for more of a scramble and a challenge, Briggs Bluff and Mt. Difficult Traverse is a challenging but breathtaking walk, but you will want to start early so you have plenty of time to do it. You may also encounter many of the different species of wildlife native to the area on your walks, including many kangaroos.

The area is also well known for its abundance of indigenous rock art. For more information on where the best places to see these drawings, visit the tourist information center in the heart of the Halls Gap town. They can also give you maps for all of your walking trails and give you information on other activities to do within the area.
