Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is a quaint little island that you can drive to from New Brunswick. You will need a couple of days to a week to get around it properly, depending on what you want to see and how long you want to spend there. There aren't a lot of Prince Edward Island hostels, but there are a few. But it's a small enough place that you all you need is one hostel to be your home base, and you can explore the rest of the island from there.

It's largest city is Charlottetown and it is a good idea to check into a hostel here and get your bearings around the island and figure out what to do. Majority of the different historical attractions here are scattered across the island so do your research before you figure out what route you are going to take. If you don't have a car, they do run tours out of Charlottetown but only in peak tourist season in the summer months so it is not a great idea to head here outside of the weeks they have for summer. It is also a good idea to check out where the PEI hostels are so that you don't get stranded. Many of the hostels here are also seasonal and most of the towns are very small and will not have too much in the way of accommodation in them. The hostels, when open have a very homely feel about them generally.

Also while you are here in Charlottetown, make sure that you go and check out some of the PEI famous Cows Creamery ice cream and also go and collect yourself a PEI Dirt Shirt, dyed completely from the strongly red ochre-coloured dirt that makes PEI so famous.

If you're a fan of Anne of Green Gables, make sure that you head over to Stanley Bridge to the Green Gables property that set the scene for the L. M. Montgomery novels. While you are in the area, check out the impressive red sand and rocks at Cavendish Beach. Still on the northern coast is the Prince Edward Island National Park and this is fairly spectacular to see as well. As mentioned before, one of the most stunning and strange features of this island is the red dirt so head to as many beach areas as possible to explore as it is really worth it.
