The sweetest people
What beautiful people working in this hostel. I've been sick for a week when I was here (wasn't their food or Anything!) and they helped me so so well. They were really sweet and took good care of me. The people That own the place and work there really love what they are doing and you can feel their love resonating all over. They have Great Books to read and the most stunning views. Beautiful little dorms and lovely and cheap food. I had to leave in a rush but I want to say a Thousand times Thank You! Definitely a must go!!
Indescribable!!
Mdumbi is a place that is simply indescribable. Ive tried describing it to friends and family but you just cant quite emphasize enough on how amazing this place is. The atmosphere, the people, the happiness. It will always be on top of my list. Best holiday spot by far.
A hidden gem of the Transkei
I can safely say that Mdumbi backpackers is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. Owned by 50% of the local community and set next to a beautiful, rustic beach,it is well worth going off the beaten track to stay in one of the hostel's rondavels. (It was comfy with a handy sink for late night toothbrushing). Home from home, we were welcomed into the warmth on a rainy afternoon with armfuls of popcorn and cosy blankets. The hostel staff could not be friendlier with the lovely Lusanda taking us on a gentle hike of the hostel's neighbouring village Tshani with its rolling hills and mud huts. Our enthusiastic tour guide told us about the village and took us into a local mama's hut, who explained to us all about xhosa culture. And if that wasn't enough we visited the local Shebeen with Lusanda to collect some cider and ordered some delicious home made pancakes at the local-run Ziyaduma restaurant, overlooking the beautiful Mdumbi river. There are a plethora of cheap as chips activities to choose from, and what makes them so great is that they are run by the locals... so if you are after a fishing trip or kayak down the river this is the place to do it! Or if you are after a stroll, there is a quiet beach to tackle or the hostel's new forest walk to explore, which has some lovely views overlooking the sea and is a prime spot for finding whales and dolphins. Johan and his staff cooked up a storm, with delicious cheap home cooked food. A highlight being the seafood braai, with grilled crayfish and xhosa bread, which made it even more difficult to leave! (Though you can actually order a fresh batch of xhosa bread for only R50!) A hidden gem worth looking for, this fair trade accredited hostel is going places with its solar powered showers and vegetable garden -- watered using recycled shower water.
The true beauty of the Wild Coast!
It is difficult to put into words what you will experience at Mdumbi Backpackers and in the Mankosi community, but I will try nonetheless. If you wish to "get away" from the typical tourist trail of South Africa and really spend some time within a unspoilt destination then there really is no better place to visit than Mdumbi. I ended up staying 3 months as a volunteer with the NPO affiliated with the backpackers. The backpackers is 50% community owned and is constantly looking at ways to enhance the quality of life of local people. The staff go beyond in making you feel welcome and I felt at home instantly here. The area itself is breath-takingly beautiful, the heart and soul of the Transkei really is found in Mdumbi. The accommodation itself is in comfortable rondavels (or camping), with all the facilities you would expect of a backpackers. Fully equipped kitchen, restaurant with delicious homemade meals (and the mama's will always cook a vegetarian option for you!), eco-showers and toilets. There is a shuttle service running from Coffee Bay so despite it's remote location it is accessible to all travelers -- even better, walk from Coffee Bay! It offers something for everyone -- solo travelers, couples, groups and families. You will not regret going off the beaten track! There are lots of very reasonably priced activities on offer from surfing to kayaking, but equally good just to spend some time for yourself in this idyllic setting, incredible beach, dolphins and whales, sunsets, fires and peaceful days walking in the hills. Unique opportunity to learn about a small rural Xhosa community, without the exploitative tourist experiences offered by some other destinations. Not really a "party" place like Coffee Bay, but you will have a good time here without a bar and loud music. The shebeen is up the road with very cheap beer, lovely people, beautiful stars, guitar, drums, bonfires and braiis.
Beautiful location but VERY POOR and UNWELCOMING STAFF
We stayed here for a few days. The location is very beautiful and restful. The staff is VERY unkind, we felt like we were unwelcome -- we were even OVER CHARGED for a tour -- we paid in advance and we had to pay for it again. They refused to give us a refund. WE WILL NOT GO THERE AGAIN!
This is the best hostel in the whole world there's no place on earth where you regenerate more...
Heaven on earth, visible in every breath.
The most awesome place to stay, even in the winter. It is so nice, great hosts, and excellent food. I highly recommend it!
