Friendly, clean, cheap and very convenient
Right next to Roma termini, but one of the cheapest hostels in Italy, friendly and helpful staff, kitchen and luggage room, only thing lacking was a nice common room, but you shouldn't be sitting round a hostel when in Rome!

Bare essentials -- barely
Very cold, depressing place, its main value being cheap price and location -- short walk away from Termini. I was returning to Rome for one day before my flight so I took it, just to spend the night and get to airport in time. If you think about spending more than one night, search for other hostel. Toilets smell, you'll be hitting your head and back on the bed above, there are no lights near beds but strange iron thingies you can hit your head with. Nothing but main basics, and even those -- just about. WiFi only works in a reception, where its damnably cold for some reason, and loud. Personnel is ok-ish, pretty uninterested, they don't make up for shortcomings, but that would be a tall order indeed. Oh, and below they have very annoying, noisy eating place with personnel harassing you like maniacs. At least they only want your money.
One of the worst of my trip
Perhaps it is Rome, because it is very hard to get anything decent for a cheap price. The hostel is not too expensive, but in no particular order; they charge 50cents for printing, only 2 computers, their breakfast is rubbish and it means you have to find something decent to eat around Termini which is no easy task, I was given the wrong directions to Trastevere and received barely an apology, my dorm had no curtain on the window, the security locks are poor quality, the music downstairs, vibrates the room at night, I had a guy check-in at 11.30pm in my room and then woke up with some guy who looked like he was off the street or an employee, the mattresses still have the plastic on them, the staff are rude (not all of them though) and there is no lift and you have to climb up quite a few floors. There is a free drink but only if you have their awful bar wine. The kitchen is ok though and the cleaners do clean. Overall, one of the worst but if you are desperate and do not ask them for directions, it is bearable.

The worst Hostel I have ever stayed in
Just came back from a weekend there. The place is a complete rack. Dirty, smelly, and has such a low water-pressure that it is impossible to take a decent shower. It is also very noisy mainly due to the bar downstairs (which is owned by the hostel). If that is not enough, the owner, Mario, is a nasty piece of work. When we complained about some of the things mentioned above, he basically told us to f*** of. In short, think twice before staying there. There are better and cheaper, hostels in Rome.
I just stayed here three nights, and it wasn't all that bad. It wasn't great either, but I do think it should get more than one star. The location really is the best thing about it. Breakfast was a nice choice of different sweets, cereals, juices, and coffee. Staff was average. There are two internet stations, you get ten minutes free every day. The common area is really small and didn't appeal to me to hang out. But I met nice people in the dorms. Bathrooms are small and old. Be prepared to walk up many steps!
Honestly, staff generally unfriendly (specially the young arrogant guy) and way too uptight about its hostel reservation policy. We were six people and had to pay for eight. The beds sat empty when two other friends where not able to make it (Checked in at 6 p.m., there was still plenty of time to rent out the beds to other guests). Rooms are green and not much to them, but I guess that's what you could expect in a hostel. They accept no credit cards. During our entire stay (two nights) there was a bucket right in front of our door catching the water from the dripping ceiling. Almost fell over it going to the bathroom at night. The breakfast is served somewhere outside the hostel so you have to go all the way down three floors and out of the hostel to get your morning coffee. We skipped it. I guess what put me off most with this place was the attitude at the front desk. He was just too eager to get our money and explain his refined hostel policy to us. It just didn't feel right and gave a bad taste of the whole stay at M&J's. The only favorable thing about this place, if I have to choose one, would be is its ok location. If you have a reservation and check in after 6 p.m., be prepared, you will lose your bed at this place! Good luck if you have to pick this one!
This hostel is very close to termini station. But is only that. This is the worse hostel that I've ever been. So, I hope that everybody has one idea before the reservation. the bathrooms are dirty. the hostel doesn't have internet (as well as said in the reservation). the staff is ok. doesn't have lift and the hotel is on fourth floor. the breakfast is served in a bar downstairs, but isn't only simple. Is only terrible, awful. So, if you want to stay close to termini station is good, but is only this thing that is nice.
I was pleased by the way M&J treated me and my boyfriend during our staying there (February 9 through 11). The personnel was friendly and they treated us respectfully, they helped us without interest. We came in the night, from a long walk in the rain, and our clothes were so wet. Without their help, I don't think we could have had any chance of visiting Rome the second, and the last, day. The rooms were ok, average by size, but the window was very small (there were eight beds). The beds were just a little bit uncomfortable, but the shits clean. The two baths on the hall weren't enough for all of us, approximately twenty people on the floor, maybe even more, and they were very small. The breakfast is not much, but, at least you can enjoy it in a very nice place, the downstairs bar. The kitchen is well-equipped and pretty large. So, after all, it is a hostel! I haven't been in many hostels -- in fact this one was the first, but it really was ok. So, don't miss it, if looking for a place to stay in Rome!
