Valladolid Hostel (Former Spanglish Hostel), Valladolid

Spanglis Hostel is newly opened and is directly run by the owner, a middle-aged Argentinian man who has lived in Valladolid for a while and knows the best activities to do there.

The Location

The location is very convenient, as it is less than five minutes' waking from the bus station, which is the same for ADO and Oriente buses that most backpackers use to reach Valladolid. It is also very central in the town, less than ten minutes from the main square and the bars for some nightlife.

Rooms and Bathrooms

It has different types of rooms, most of which have an en suite bathroom with shower. The building looks a bit dirty and doesn’t have any indications that is a hostel, and could be a bit tricky to find. The rooms are cleaned and toilets are averagely cleaned as well. It has bunk beds and there are no a personal lights or charging spots for each bed, which can be uncomfortable. All the dorms are on the first floor, while some private rooms are on the ground level. It has only some old lockers and they are significantly less than the number of beds for each room.

The shower has mostly cold water and there is no soap or shampoo available to be used. On a good note, towels and breakfast are included in the price.

Common Spaces

The reception is right at the entrance of the hostel, and is followed by a nice courtyard where there are some tables; breakfast is served here. There is also a small swimming pool and some equipment for workouts next to it. The kitchen is fairly spacious and is inside. All guests can cook and store food in the fridge or freezer. Drinkable water is offer for free and it is also possible to refill a personal bottle. Basic ingredients for cooking such as oil and salt are available and it is convenient if guests are willing to cook.

The atmosphere in the hostel is very quiet, as most of the guests wake up very early in the morning to go to do tours (mostly to Chichen Itza). It is not very easy to meet other travelers and it is probably not a good option if you are looking for a social place to make new friends. Guests tend to stay only a night and head on to the next destination.

Summary

In conclusion, we argue that the hostel is a great choice if used only for sleeping. It is a perfect starting point for tours around Valladolid and is fairly cheap compared to other hostels in Valladolid. It's definitely not a party hostel, as it doesn’t offer any fun or social activities for nightlife. The owner is helpful in planning tours and trips around Yucatán and other destinations.
