Kaung Hostel Reviews

Kaung Hostel has the potential to be a good hostel, but unfortunately due to a number of serious flaws it really isn't. Getting a good night's sleep is not in the cards if you're at the front of the building, due to the the extremely noisy main road outside (and this is especially true if you are in one of the rooms that doesn't have proper windows that you can close). The breakfast is poor, hot showers are limited, the atmosphere is dead, and the faults don't stop there. Moreover, the many "you are being watched by CCTV" signs around the building give it a very unwelcoming and big-brother-type of feel.

The Location

The hostel can be easily reached from Mandalay's central moat, which circles the palace. You will need to be at the southwest corner of the moat, which fortunately is closest to Mandalay's main train station. From here, head west, away from the moat, along Twenty-sixth Street. Keep to the right hand side of the road and you will see the hostel after approximately a hundred meters.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The beds here are huge, comfy, and well fitted; they come with under-bed lockers, reading lights, and plug sockets. They almost resemble pods. However, the rooms are so cramped that two people can't even leave their beds at a time. Noise from the road is a huge issue, and given that proper, closable windows are sometimes not fitted, sleeping is difficult (even with earplugs). Bathrooms are kitted out to a very high standard, with toilets on each floor; however, annoyingly, the men's shower room is on the bottom floor, meaning that you have to go down two floors and past the reception just for a shower. Furthermore, hot showers are only available between 6 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

Common Spaces

Although the common spaces are pretty cool and quirky with comfy seating options, since the seating is divided into small compartments, it makes socializing difficult. There is a guest computer (free) in one compartment, two compartments with seating, and a dining room (again, separated into two). The person who designed this definitely wasn't thinking about socializing. Wi-Fi is strong and fast throughout the building.

Summary

Hostels laid out and furnished like this are usually perfect for the traveler who wants a cozy retreat. However, if you want a good night's sleep, definitely don't stay here, as it's far too noisy. There are far better options nearby in Mandalay for a similar price. Meeting people will be difficult and there just isn't any kind of homey feel to the place.
