Hostel la Qhia is a small, homey stone manor in the heart of the Panamian highlands.

The Location

The hostel is a little bit away from the heart of the town, but it's nothing unworkable. There is a supermarket and restaurant at the end of the street, but any other options are further away in town. The bus to and from Santiago drops off in the heart of the town, which is a few hundred metres away, but then the bus station is right next to the supermarket at the end of the street. Plenty of parking is available in the confines of the hostel itself.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorms are limited to eight-bed rooms with an en suite bathroom/shower. Rooms are fairly comfortable, though the pillows are lacking; some shelving and lockers (which are too small for anything more than small electronic goods and the like) available for guest use. Privates range from twin privates with or without an en suite bathroom or a five-person family lodging with en suite.

Bathrooms are clean with plenty of space and a decent amount of places to put clothing and toiletries. There is a second bathroom/shower for guest use, however, it is in the main house, meaning a small walk over the grassy lawn is necessary.

Common Spaces

There is a shared kitchen with decent provisions and a small sitting area within and it is as clean as you are going to get from an outdoor kitchen. There is also an almost-dining-room-type area with tables and chairs plus a pair of hammocks for guests, plus a lounge area in the main house that features a book exchange.

The hostel is surrounded by gardens and lawns, making an in-hostel picnic an option for those tired of hiking the innumerable trails that stretch over the surrounding mountains and national parks.

The small size of the hostel and the fact that most people staying there are there to hike during the day creates a fun, almost homey vibe. Also, expect to see fellow guests wandering around the prescribed trails from the hostel-provided map.

Summary

This hostel has a beautiful location, nestled within the mountains of Santa Fe with good views of the surrounds and pretty gardens to hang out in before and after hikes. It's a winner!

• Bus
• There is a bus approximately every 20 minutes (depending on the time of day), it is a little less than a couple of hours from the Santiago station. The first bus leaves at 04:30 and the last at 18:30. Get off the bus at the Cooperativa (tell the driver the Cooperativa Grande); In front of the cooperative there is a sign that says Hostal la Qhia, we are the fifth entrance on the right hand side, just 1 minute walk from the Cooperative.

• Take Avenida Polidoro Pinzon to the right under the vehicular bridge that crosses the inter-American highway in the city of Santiago, calle 33 in google maps, continue for 57 km, until the town of Santa Fe. Then find the large La Cooperativa supermarket, in front From this there is a sign that indicates Hostal la Qhia, go towards the address and count 4 house entrances and we are the 5th entrance.
