African Soul Surfer is one of two backpacker hostels currently open in Muizenberg, and as the name suggests it also caters mainly to the surfer crowd.
The Location
Located right by the beach with a view right across the bay to Simon's Town, African Soul Surfer is just a three-minute walk from the railway station. Muizenberg is easily reached from Cape Town city center by train in around fifty minutes.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This place is full of contrasts. While the good is detailed below, the rooms are the other side of the coin. The twelve-bed dorm is actually two rooms of six bunk beds, each separated by a curtained archway. The beds are crammed in, not leaving much floor space for luggage. It's clean enough (just), and there are lockers if you have your own padlock, but they are very small. The linen is clean, but the pillows are really thin. There are two four-bed dorms for women only. The private rooms are basic and functional and the common showers and toilets are the same -- clean enough and functional.
Common Spaces
African Soul Surfer occupies the top two floors above a couple of surf shops. The common areas are where the effort has been put in. There are a number of lounge areas, all neat and tidy and snug. The place has a very relaxed, laid-back atmosphere with couches and easy chairs scattered all over the first floor. There are photos, artwork, and maps on the walls, and you can look out over the long, curving bay. The common kitchen has a kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge, and cooker and there is a sitting area adjoining it. Through the doorway is the intimate little bar, tucked into a corner, with easy chairs and the main lounge. A pool table sits at the other end of the long lounge. Upstairs, where most of the rooms are, there is another small lounge with a TV in it.
Summary
This place is worth recommending for the common areas alone. It has a great ambience, especially around the bar and main lounge area. Guests however don't get many freebies here. There is free Wi-Fi, with a reasonable signal in the lounges, but you get no free breakfast here and no free tea and coffee, which is standard in the vast majority of South African hostels. There are surfboard and wetsuit rentals here, and you can buy snacks and quick meals from the bar or a one of a number of healthy set breakfasts. They also do yoga classes here. The accommodation could certainly do with a rethink, in our opinion. The twelve-bed dorm room is too cramped and the smaller four-bed dorms are reserved for females only -- bad luck if you're a bloke!
