Get to know Trefin (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Trefin.

Trefin is a tiny village on the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales. Aside from the houses and the rental cottages, there is a small pub/inn (The Ship), and a small cafe that is also a Trefin hostel (which also houses the village hall). You can get food from The Ship (they serve lunch and dinner), but it is a bit pricey. The nearest shop is at a petrol station about a mile away, or you can go into St. Davids, where there are more options for food/supply shopping.

While there is not much to do within the village itself, it is a gateway to the trails along the coast. Often there are town gatherings within the Village Hall (which is attached to a Trefin hostel) and it's a good way to listen to the locals speaking Welsh with each other (or better yet, to mingle with them). There are some lovely walks that go either way (north or south) along the coast with breathtaking views.

You can walk to some nearby beaches as well (although the water is very cold and the current is unpredictable and strong), but they are great picnic places. The coast trail leads you to and through neighboring villages, and keep an eye out for castle ruins along the way!

Trefin is a great place to get away into the true countryside of Wales. There is an excellent bus service that runs along the trail as well (which stops right in Trefin), so you always have the option of taking the bus somewhere and walking back or walking to a stop and catching the bus back. Be warned, though, the bus drivers are often a little late, very chatty, and drive like maniacs. So be prepared to arrive when you arrive, and don't plan your schedule too tightly.
