In the third century BC, Hannibal advanced through Iberia and besieged and conquered the ancient city of Helmántica, now known as Salamanca. Then, Salamanca was part of the Roman Empire, was conquered by the Muslims in the eighth century and was under Islam rule for more than three hundred years.

Today, the city has more than one hundred and fifty inhabitants and is a very interesting place to visit in Spain. It has several festivals. The Commemoration of St. Agatha takes place in early February and it is a very popular festival in Salamanca. Easter in Salamanca is one of the most established celebrations of the city, attracting many tourists. The Lunes de Aguas is exclusive for Salamanca on the Monday following Easter Monday. You could also visit the Casa de las Conchas, built in the late fifteenth century; the Casa de Don Diego Maldonado, a Renaissance palace from the sixteenth century; the Casa de doña María la Brava, a private house built near the end of the fifteenth century; the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco; the Museum of City History; the Museum of the Trade of Salamanca; and the Museum House Unamuno.

Salamanca is also home to the University of Salamanca, the oldest active university in Spain. It was founded in the early thirteenth century by Alfonso IX of León and was the first in Europe that held the title of university by an edict in the thirteenth century.

There are a few places where most Salamanca hostels are located. The first is near the University of Salamanca, the second is near the College of Public Education, and the third concentration of Salamanca hostels is near the Convent of St. Stephen. Generally, most hostels in Salamanca have a good location and are open all year long. The prices of hostels in Salamanca range from low to average. With a few exceptions, the conditions of hostels in Salamanca are quite good, especially for their price.
