There are plenty of hostels in Pisa in virtually every part of the town. Some hostels in Pisa are located in old buildings and might lack some modern facilities but compensate with their atmosphere. However, there are also many Pisa hostels in new buildings. All Pisa hostels are within walking distance of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and this should not be a concern -- after all, the town is small. Prices of hostels in Pisa vary.
You might have problems finding your Pisa hostel as the streets are quite chaotic, so do not be afraid to ask people for directions and be sure to know the name of the street where your Pisa hostel is located. Although Pisa is a massive tourist city, most locals do not speak English but are very helpful. In other words, basic Italian knowledge can do miracles. At least get to know the colors as the bus lines are in colors ("verdi" is green, "rosso" is red).
You can go to Pisa by plain or train. The bus station is very close to the center of the city and all hostels in Pisa are within twenty minutes' walking at most -- some of them are even closer. Getting to your hostel in Pisa from the airport would require taking some public transportation (strongly recommended) or a taxi. Public transportation is great -- reliable, cheap, and regular. Even taking a taxi would not cost you much, as the distances are small. However, there are not so many taxis available and you might wait a lot.
